Power BI Advanced Topics

Power BI Tools: DAX Introduction Course

Overview

In this two-day course, students will be introduced to using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX), which is the expression language that is used to create custom calculations in the Power BI Data model. The course covers some of the theoretical underpinnings of the data model and DAX, but the emphasis is on using DAX to solve common business problems. Students will learn how to write their own calculated columns, measures, and tables, how to visualize the way Power BI computes DAX calculations, and how to troubleshoot custom code. This instructor-led course consists of a combination of lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on labs.

Software Used During the Class

The standard lab setup for this class consists of a Window 10 PC with Power BI Desktop and DAX Studio installed.

Audience

This course is intended for business users who have been using Power BI to build analytic solutions and are ready to take advantage of the power and flexibility that DAX provides. Learning DAX is a very common “next step” for experienced Power BI users.

Prerequisites

Although experience with Power BI Desktop is not strictly required for this class, students with at least some familiarity will be better equipped to get the most out of the lab work.

Power BI Tools: Get and Transform Data (with M Programming) Course

Overview

This course is for individuals responsible for taking data and turning it into powerful business intelligence solutions. With Power Query you can transform data (by reducing, adding columns, and combining data sets) so that it is setup for additional analysis. Power Query makes “data munging” and “data wrangling” easy for non-programmers working as data scientists.

This course takes an in-depth approach to the Power Query and will provide an introduction to the M language, allowing you to replay a series of transformations. This is helpful when readying data on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis, saving you time on these repetitive tasks. M Code will also allow you to manipulate data using features that are not accessible via keyboard commands.

Audience

This class is for users of either Power BI , Excel Power Tools, or SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). While all three products have a very similar Power Query-related interface, the course will be taught using the Excel 2016 software. Users of Power BI and SQL Server should have no problems with the slight differences between products.

This course is aimed at Excel power-users, Power BI users, BI professionals, and Excel power-users who have a general familiarity with Power Query but need more knowledge and experience to take it to its full potential. Our Power BI Tools: DAX Introduction  course is a great complement to this class and is also designed for users of Excel, Power BI or SQL Server.

Prerequisites

While attendees do not need extensive prior experience with DAX formulas, it is recommended that they have attended either Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst  OR Power BI Introduction for Excel Users  OR have similar experience.

R Programming Introduction Course

Overview

Learn how to perform data analysis with the R language and software environment, even if you have little or no programming experience. With the tutorials in this class, you’ll learn how to use the essential R tools you need to know to analyze data, including data types and programming concepts. The also shows you real data analysis in action by covering everything from importing data to publishing your results.

Audience

This class is for the non-programmer who wants to gain a basic understanding of R.

Prerequisites

No prior programming experience is necessary. Some background in statistics is helpful, but not necessary.

Course Objectives

• Write a simple R program, and discover what the language can do
• Use data types such as vectors, arrays, lists, data frames, and strings
• Execute code conditionally or repeatedly with branches and loops
• Learn R add-on packages

SQL Querying: Fundamentals Course

Overview

Organizations use large SQL databases to store information about clients, products, or sales. However, that data is locked into those databases until it is accessed by a business intelligence tool such as Power BI, Tableau or Crystal Reports. With the proper permissions, analysts can use SQL to select the data they need for additional analysis and reporting. This class, SQL Querying: Fundamentals, provides an overview of the SQL commands that can be used to access that data.

You will:
• Connect to the SQL Server database and execute a simple query.
• Include a search condition in a simple query.
• Use various functions to perform calculations on data.
• Organize the data obtained from a query before it is displayed on-screen.
• Retrieve data from multiple tables.

Target Student

This course is intended for individuals with basic computer skills, familiar with concepts related to database structure and terminology, and who want to learn the basics of querying SQL databases using the SELECT statement.

Prerequisites

Some familiarity with database terminology and structure is helpful.

With our SQL Querying: Fundamentals  course you learned the basics of SQL querying.
During this SQL Querying Advanced class you will build on that foundation, learning advanced querying techniques such as writing nested queries and using views to simplify repetitive querying tasks. You will learn how to perform common database administration tasks such as duplicating tables; modifying table structures; inserting, updating, or deleting data; and indexing tables to optimize query performance. You will also learn how to work with multiple tasks as a transaction.

In This Course You will:

• Construct advanced queries and apply them to data.
• Use nested queries to generate query output.
• Manipulate table data by inserting, modifying, and deleting data.
• Manipulate the structure of tables.
• Work with views to present data.
• Index data to improve querying efficiency.
