Android For mobile devices like tablets and smartphones, Android is an operating system and software bundle built on the Linux platform.

Google and then the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) are in charge of its development. Although other languages can be used, Java is the primary language used to develop Android programming.

The goal of android project is to create a successful real-world product that improves the mobile experience for end users.

History of Android

The history and versions of android are interesting to know. The code names of android ranges from A to J currently, such as Aestro, Blender, Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwitch, Jelly Bean, KitKat and Lollipop. Let’s understand the android history in a sequence.

Android Architecture

android architecture or Android software stack is categorized into five parts:

  1. linux kernel
  2. native libraries (middleware),
  3. Android Runtime
  4. Application Framework
  5. Applications

Let’s see the android architecture first.

android software stack, architecture

1) Linux kernel

It is the core component of Android architecture and may be found at its base. Device drivers, power management, memory management, device management, and resource access are all handled by the Linux kernel.

2) Native Libraries

The Linux kernel is topped with native libraries such as WebKit, OpenGL, FreeType, SQLite, Media, C runtime library (libc), etc.

The WebKit library handles browser compatibility; SQLite handles database functionality; FreeType handles font support; and Media plays and records audio and video formats.

3) Android Runtime

The DVM (Dalvik Virtual Machine), which is in charge of running Android applications, and key libraries make up the Android runtime. Similar to JVM, but mobile device optimized is DVM. It offers quick performance and uses minimal memory.

4) Android Framework

The Android Framework sits above the Native libraries and Android runtime. Android APIs for UI (User Interface), phone, resources, locations, Content Providers (data), and package managers are all part of the Android framework. It offers a plethora of classes and interfaces for creating Android applications.

5) Applications

There are apps on top of the Android foundation. Every program, including browsers, games, contacts, home, and settings, requires the Android framework, which in turn uses the Android runtime and libraries. Linux kernel is used by the native libraries and Android runtime.

Android Core Building Blocks

An android component is simply a piece of code that has a well defined life cycle e.g. Activity, Receiver, Service etc.

The core building blocks or fundamental components of android are activities, views, intents, services, content providers, fragments and AndroidManifest.xml.

Activity

A class that represents a single screen is called an activity. It resembles an AWT frame.

View

An example of a user interface element is a button, label, text field, etc. A view is something that you can see.

Install Android

Android supports java, c++, c# etc. language to develop android applications. Java is the officially supported language for android. All the android examples of this site is developed using Java language and Eclipse IDE.

Here, we are going to tell you, the required softwares to develop android applications using Eclipse IDE.
