To maintain one of the top maritime schools in the country, the CSU Board of Trustees has authorized the merger of Cal Maritime with Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo.

Integration of Cal Maritime and Cal Poly

On November 21, the California State University Board of Trustees made history by voting in favor of the CSU Chancellor’s proposal to merge Cal Poly and Cal Maritime Academy. This integration builds on Cal Poly’s strong track record in admissions and enrollment and unites two institutions that share a hands-on, immersive educational approach while creating administrative efficiencies. Integration offers a wealth of options and advantages for staff, instructors, and students. The merger process is proceeding with the trustees’ consent, aiming to welcome the first students from Cal Poly Maritime Academy and Cal Poly Solano Campus into the Cal Poly family by fall 2026.

​​Today, California State University (CSU), the largest and most diverse public four-year university in the country, announced ​a first-of-its-kind public-private initiative with some of the world’s leading tech companies, including Adobe, Alphabet (Google), AWS, IBM, Instructure, Intel, LinkedIn, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI, and the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom that will leverage the power of artificial intelligence to create an AI-empowered higher education system that could surpass any existing model in both scale and impact. The CSU’s unprecedented adoption of AI technologies will make training, learning, and teaching tools—including ChatGPT—available across all 23 CSU universities, ensuring that the system’s more than 460,000 students and 63,000 Equal access to state-of-the-art resources equip instructors and staff to fulfill California’s rapidly evolving employment and education demands. These resources should be made available by CSU in the following weeks.

Given that it grants about half of the bachelor’s degrees in the state, CSU’s impact on California’s workforce and economy highlights its critical role in determining the state’s future. It helps create more than 209,000 jobs annually, and one in 10 employees in California is a CSU alum. However, while over 30 of the top 50 AI firms in the world are based in California, over 50% of the AI workforce in the United States is international. At the heart of this groundbreaking effort is the AI Workforce Accele​ration Board​, a collaboration with nearly a dozen of the world’s leading tech companies and Governor Newsom’s Office that will identify and advocate for AI skills needed in California’s workforce and economy. The advisory board will also include officials from CSU, who will organize several AI challenges to promote creativity and advance multidisciplinary practical applications of AI.

The advisory board will guide these events and encourage CSU students and faculty to collaborate on pressing issues such as climate change and housing affordability, leveraging AI technologies to create impactful solutions. CSU anticipates adding more tech firms to its advisory board in the upcoming months.

Additionally, the CSU will collaborate with OpenAI to implement ChatGPT Edu, a variant of ChatGPT that provides sophisticated tools, security, and controls for educational establishments.California State University

This effort ensures that all 23 campuses within the Nation’s most extensive public four-year university system—from Cal Poly Humboldt in Northern California to San Diego State University in the south—will have fair access to ChatGPT. AI will allow staff, instructors, and students to employ workflow efficiency, promote cross-departmental cooperation, and speed up learning.

CSU’s chief information officer, Ed Clark, stated, “We are thrilled to collaborate with industry leaders to help the CSU build on our success in an AI-driven economy.
