The common goal of the MIT community is to improve the world by innovation, research, and education. We are eccentric and entertaining, sophisticated but not pretentious, creative and imaginative, fixated on figures, and open to gifted individuals from all backgrounds.

The provocative slogan of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, is “Mind and Hand.” This intriguing slogan sums up this illustrious institution’s goal of advancing knowledge in science, technology, and academic fields that might improve the globe.

When MIT was first established in 1861, it was a small group of science enthusiasts and problem solvers who were motivated to use their expertise to better the world. With over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students and about 1,000 faculty members, MIT has grown into a massive educational institution today. Massachusetts Institute

MIT is a privately funded, autonomous, coeducational university with one college (computing) and five schools (humanities, arts, and social sciences, management, science, and architecture and planning). Nonetheless, the foundation of MIT’s educational philosophy continues to be the idea of educational innovation. Massachusetts Institute

In addition to being at the forefront of advances in artificial intelligence, HIV/AIDS, cancer, and poverty alleviation, MIT researchers have previously contributed to scientific discoveries like radar, magnetic core memory, and the idea of an expanding universe.

MIT is more than just a science and technology school, though. Twenty percent of MIT undergraduates participate in athletics, and the school has one of the most extensive intercollegiate athletic programs in the world with 33 varsity sports.

College life is also permeated with a lively artistic culture. On campus, there are twelve museums and galleries. Massachusetts Institute

The MIT Museum welcomes up to 125,000 people annually. More than sixty music, theater, literature, and dance groups are attended by students, and MIT faculty members include Guggenheim fellows and Pulitzer Prize winners.

Situated on 168 acres of land that stretch over a mile along the Cambridge side of the Charles River basin, MIT is a unique educational institution. The campus is home to beautiful buildings in a variety of architectural styles, from neoclassical to modernist and brutalist, as well as iconic structures created by notable architects like Frank Gehry, Steven Hollin, and Alvar Aalto. The campus borders a number of Cambridge districts, one of which being Kendall Square, one of the world’s most creative square miles. The strong relationship between industry and research has aided MIT graduates in starting more than 30,000 businesses that are currently operating, supporting 4.6 million jobs and bringing in around $1.9 trillion annually. It makes sense, therefore, that a country comprised entirely of MIT graduates would have an economy that ranks tenth in the world.

Student Life

Everybody is welcome at MIT thanks to its 500+ student organizations (chocolate science, anyone?), nearly 40 Greek-letter and independent living groups, chaplains for more than 20 different faith traditions, and dedication to diversity and inclusion. Students select their own extracurricular activities to supplement their coursework and studies. These activities range from dozens of groups that appreciate and celebrate cultures from around the world to a staggering diversity of opportunities to engage in music, dance, and sports.MIT has a robust support system to assist students in overcoming obstacles, which is occasionally enhanced by visits from puppies, piglets, and pygmy goats.

Housing & Dining

Our residential halls are an integral component of the MIT experience for students, serving as a hub for entertainment, a brain trust, a support network, and more. Both the academic experiences and the unique personalities and customs of campus residences—such as the piano drop in Baker House or the intercampus water fight—have a significant impact on the development of our students. At MIT, there are six dining halls, about a dozen retail restaurants, vending centers, and a range of meal plan choices, so there is no shortage of options when it comes to dining.
